What is Contact Improvisation?

Contact improvisation is a dance technique which uses physical contact as a starting point for exploration. The form grew out of Steve Paxton's movement studies in the 1970s, into a technique used by dance therapists, dancers, choreographers, performing artists…

The first weekend
addresses the fundamentals of Contact Improv, and is perfect both for entry-level and for more experienced practioners who wish to reconnect with themselves.

The second weekend is aimed at people who wish to expand their experience of Contact Improv, integrating elements of theatrical space and martial art traditions, such as tai chi pushing hands.

Are there any other Contact Improv opportunities in Hong Kong ?

Yes. Kongtact Square runs monthly jams in Wong Tai Sin. You should come!
However, because jams are so free-form, it can be difficult to pick up technique just from jams. These workshops attempt to give a systematic overview of Contact Improv's fundamentals, which can then be integrated in the context of a jam.

Having jammed in many cities, we've discovered that different cities have slightly different styles or vocabulary. So what is our culture of Contact like? Does the sense of touch have a different cultural nuance, or are we universally human? Can we draw naturally on our traditions, like tai chi? We're hoping these workshops to be a dialogue for this.

Instructor Bios

Hofan Chau 周可凡 (HK) and Daniel Finkel (Seattle) both trained in Contact Improvisation under Leah Stein, in Pennsylvania (USA) from 2000-2002. Since then, they have jammed and taken workshops, together and separately, in Philadelphia, Oregon, Paris, London, Budapest, Bytom, and Hong Kong.

A native of HK, Hofan is a freelance actor, dancer and director. She jams regularly with Kongtact Square and was recently their performance "Preview" (Sept 2007). Hofan returned to HK last year after her studies in the Lecoq school (Paris) and the London Intenational school of Performing Arts. In the past year, she has performed in The Overcoat with Theatre du Pif, Air & Breath II with Y-Space and << 我家有個大門神>>.

Daniel is a founder of Quiet Monkey Fight Improv, which performed recently at the 2007 Toronto International Improv Festival. Recently, he premiered a dance combining his passion in mathematics and dance in a piece called I Found My Thrill, which premiered at the Breitenbush Contact Jam festival.

Currently, Daniel and Hofan are working on BurntMango's latest creation - "Concrete Jungle Berzerk!." Daniel is flying all the way from Seattle just for this. Ah yes - and to teach you too!
