About the company

Born from the nomadic wanderings of its Artistic Directors, Burnt Mango Dance Theatre became a collaborative framework for international artists to create dance theatre projects.

Burnt Mango believes in creating work from the integrity of the moment, and works on the exchange of energy between performer to performer to audience. The company creates with techniques such as contact improvisation, butoh, Lecoq physical theatre, tai chi and choral / vocal meditations.

Works in their repetoire have been created and performed in Philadelphia, Paris, London and Hong Kong. They include Aftermath with Cocoa (winner of the Melvin B Troy Award for Choreography. 2003), Diamond Baby (2004) and Craig & Miriam (2006) .

In the August of 2006, Burnt Mango returned to Hong Kong. Its eclectic ensemble include two former office cubicle workers, a managing director of a garment plant, a windsurfing instructor and his daughter, as well as freelance theatre professionals and musicians. With next-to-no budget but a passion and dedication to theatre practice, the company stands testimony to the fact that it is possible to do what you love and somehow, make a living as well.

The ensemble is currently working on Concrete Jungle Berzerk! , an original devised dance theatre piece about the city and its contradictions. The piece is directed by Hofan Chau, with the help of mathematician / improviser Daniel Finkel and music director Wong Hin-yan. Cast members include: Haruka Ashida, Josephine Chai, Wynne Lee, Walter Leung, Ken Wong, Cici Wong and Adrian Yeung.
