Choreographed and performed by Hofan Chau,
with Oliver Hsu on the cello
Premiered Swarthmore College June. 2003
Performed at the X Contemporary Dance Festival, Bytom , Poland
Aftermath (with cocoa) is Hofan Chau's debut dance piece. A seven minute solo including Bach's Cello Suite #2 in D Minor, the movement of this piece was inspired by a car accident Hofan was in in 2002.
Aftermath (with cocoa)
Small of morning meets tremor of sky
I sip you pure: dark, smooth, pungent
As two spoons on the pavement
Your hollow cups the breath of concrete
And mine, a pregnant cloud
Now we hang in stasis
Trying to re-piece confetti-glass
Our minds tug us on, busying our hands
Our hearts still beating, cold pavement.
We are a mockery to our mother wreck
Twisted blue mangled mettle
The cage that protected us, and hurtled us into the cartwheeling horizon
The cage that crushed, small breath

Prunes
Now that you are no longer here
I eat your forbidden fruit
Its dark bruised juice
and too moist flesh.
They taste no different from when I last ate them, thoughtlessly, and you
turned on me, your need stitched tight in reprimand.
But now, you need no more
And so I'm left with these wrinkled clots,
cloyingly sweet;
As I grope around around the fridge – it’s empty.
